AI in Finance: from Vision to Reality. What CFOs need to know in 2026

In 2024 I shared for the first time my thoughts on how Artificial Intelligence could transform finance. Over the next 12 months the pace of change has been nothing short of remarkable.

Here’s what became clear to me:

✅ AI adoption is no longer theoretical – In production and finance, practical use cases are emerging fast. However, successful implementation still requires AI professionals to guide integration into day-to-day operations. Productivity gains of 20–30% in areas such as production planning or quality control are possible—but only if companies are ready to invest significant financial and time resources to implement AI effectively.

✅ The era of AI Agents has begun – These agents can now take over specific tasks, freeing finance teams for strategic work. Solutions like Microsoft Copilot Studio or platforms such as n8n make it possible to create simple AI agents without programming skills. Of course, experienced AI specialists are still essential for complex implementations. I’m confident that next year we’ll see AI agents handling tasks like processing invoice complaints or creating purchase orders based on customer requests. Just imagine the automation potential in these processes!

✅ Controlling is leading the digital revolution – Tools like Power BI, connected to multiple data sources and enhanced by AI-driven analytics, are redefining how we forecast and manage performance. Predictive insights based on internal and external trends are becoming indispensable. As a long-time Excel enthusiast, I must admit: the era of Excel as the sole controlling tool is over. Modern controlling now relies on an ERP – Power BI – AI integration chain, with Excel serving only as a supporting tool.

✅ Strategy matters – If a CFO wants to introduce AI in their area, deploying isolated tools is not enough. A company-wide AI strategy and process readiness are critical to unlock real value and stay competitive. Cloud-based ERP systems, AI training for every (!) finance team member, and strong leadership from CFOs—these are now top priorities on many To-Do lists.

💡 The message is clear: AI is no longer a buzzword—it’s a business imperative. Success depends on aligning technology with strategy, governance, and talent.
